The Link Between Thyroid Disease and Chronic Urticaria
Chronic hives and autoimmune thyroid disease occur together more often than chance would predict. Thyroid antibodies are found in more people with chronic spontaneous urticaria than in the general population, although most people with chronic hives have normal thyroid function.
The Connection
Hashimoto thyroiditis, which often causes an underactive thyroid, and Graves disease, which causes an overactive thyroid, are the thyroid conditions most often associated. Both reflect immune system activity, which may also drive hives. See autoimmune hives.
Testing
Doctors commonly check TSH and, if indicated, thyroid antibodies such as anti-TPO. Normal results do not rule out chronic urticaria.
Does Treating Thyroid Disease Clear Hives?
In some people, treating thyroid disease improves hives, but this is not consistent. Hives usually still need their own treatment. Read about chronic spontaneous urticaria.
When to Call 911
Treat these symptoms as an emergency and call 911 if hives appear together with shortness of breath, a hoarse voice or trouble swallowing, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, a racing heartbeat, fainting, or vomiting and severe stomach cramps soon after a food, medication or insect sting. Do not wait to see whether they pass.
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if your symptoms last more than a few days, keep coming back, cover large areas, or interfere with sleep or daily life. If you would like a specialist’s opinion, Dr. Tiffany Young’s Hives Treatment Center in San Francisco offers online and in-person consultations for thyroid disease and hives.
