Skin Hives

Skin HivesWhat Are Skin Hives?

Skin hives are medically referred to as Urticaria and are an outbreak of red bumps and swollen areas on the skin that suddenly appear. Skin hives cause itching at times, and some people have a burning sensation wherever they appear.

Skin hives can occur anywhere on the body; even the lips, face, tongue and throat. The skin hives’ size can vary from as small as the eraser on a pencil to as large as a plate, and they can even join together to make large hives called plaques. Skin hives can last for a few hours or more than a day before finally going away.

Skin hives can also become a case of angioedema where swelling takes place under the skin causing the area to blow up like a balloon in a worst case scenario. This deep swelling is usually taken more seriously when it's around the lips, eyes and genitals. However, normally it only appears on the hands and feet. This condition can last longer than skin hives, but swelling is normally gone within 1 day’s time.

There are a few types of skin hives including acute urticaria, chronic urticaria, physical urticaria and dermatographism.

What Causes Skin Hives?

Both skin hives and angioedema are created by the body when an allergen is detected and histamine released. Histamines are chemicals your body releases from special cells inside the blood vessels when an allergen is present. The histamines are sent to the area the allergen came into contact with, causing an allergic reaction. For example, if you are allergic to aloe and had lotion on your arm from the elbow down, your allergic reaction would be swelling and hives on this area of the arm. Skin hives can move from place to place, so the allergic reaction does not have to stay in one area.

Skin hive causes include bug bites or stings, nuts, fish, eggs, chocolate, milk and fresh berries or even preservatives and food additives. Medicines can also cause this type of hives, like ibuprofen or other anti inflammatory medications; ACE inhibitors and codeine painkillers. See hives causes for more information.

What Are The Symptoms of Skin Hives?

Skin hives symptoms include red bumps and swollen areas on the skin that seem to appear out of nowhere. They are usually very itchy and may cause a burning or prickly sensation - especially when touched. They can appear on any part of your body and can vary in size from as small as the eraser on a pencil to as large as a dinner plate. These types of hives symptoms can be easily treated at home with the right over the counter medication.

Are Skin Hives Dangerous?

Skin hives are mostly harmless, but if you find them in and around your genitals, it is best to seek professional help. If you also find that the hives are restricting your breathing, and that you are not getting enough oxygen into your lungs because of it, then you should seek medical care immediately by dialing 911.

How Do I Get Rid Of My Skin Hives?

For the majority of our website visitors, we recommend a particular hives treatment (OxyHives) that has no harmful side effects and has proven to eliminate skin hives for the vast majority of them (or so they've told us). OxyHives is a medication we believe in as it is the only product we have found to actually help cure hives without the negative side effects almost all other hives medications have. OxyHives recently received approval to sell their hives treatment over the counter and thus no longer requires a prescription. Please see our hives treatment page for more information.

In about 1% to 3% of the skin hives cases, a steroid or other medication may be prescribed by your doctor. We are very apprehensive about using steroids though because of the commonly known harmful side effects: weight gain, liver tumors, jaundice, fluid retention and high blood pressure.
